Spring and summer are still absolutely doable, but you need to plan around the heat.

Think about how easily you get hot, whether your hair reacts strongly to Florida humidity, whether your makeup tends to move in heat, whether your clothing shows perspiration easily, and whether you will be wearing heavy fabrics, long sleeves, a suit, or a fitted dress.

These things matter because comfort changes body language.

If you are constantly worried about sweat, fixing your hair every few seconds, wiping your face, or feeling too hot to comfortably stand close to your partner, that can affect how relaxed and natural you look.

During warmer months, early morning or later evening engagement sessions are usually much easier.

Indoor locations can also be incorporated. A studio, hotel, restaurant, lobby, covered architectural area, or another air-conditioned location can give you a completely different look while also giving you a break from the South Florida heat.

Lightweight, breathable, or quick-drying clothing can also make the session much more comfortable.

The best time is not only about beautiful light. It is about beautiful light meeting a time when you actually feel comfortable and confident.

Both can be beautiful, but the answer should not be based only on which sky looks prettier.

On Florida’s East Coast, sunrise can bring blue, lavender, pink, peach, orange, and gold as the sun comes over the Atlantic Ocean.

At beaches in Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Hollywood, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Palm Beach, and Jupiter, early morning sessions can also mean cooler temperatures and fewer people in the background.

But think about yourself.

Are you actually a morning person?

Do you wake up looking bright-eyed and rested?

Will you feel energized or exhausted after getting ready before sunrise?

How long will hair and makeup take?

If you need professional hair and makeup before a sunrise session, what time would you realistically need to wake up?

Sunset creates a different look.

As the sun gets lower, you may see warm golds, yellow, orange, peach, pink, red, purple, and then cooler blue tones as daylight fades.

Some people also simply feel and look better later in the day because their eyes are fully awake, their face has settled, and they have had time to hydrate, eat, and get ready.

The best question is not simply, “Which light is prettier?”

It is, “Which light works best with this location, and when do we personally look and feel our best?”

The position of the sun changes where shadows fall.

When the sun is high overhead, it can create darker shadows underneath the eyes, nose, lips, chin, and neck.

It can also make people squint.

At South Florida beaches, bright sand and water can reflect even more light back toward the face.

When the sun is lower, there is more opportunity to use the light intentionally.

That can help create softer facial light, more flattering shadows, better skin tones, light around the hair, reflections in the water, silhouettes, and more dimensional photographs.

If you need to photograph during a brighter part of the day, hats, sunglasses, shade, trees, architecture, walls, and different angles can all help.

Those are not just accessories.

They can become part of the solution.

Most people look at an inspiration photograph and only see the pose.

You should look at everything around the pose.

Look at the height difference between the couple.

Look at whether the woman is wearing heels.

Look at whether those heels are changing the height relationship between the two people.

Look at the hairstyle.

Is it long, short, curled, straight, up, down, or blowing in the wind?

Look at the clothing.

Is she wearing a fitted dress, flowing dress, long train, jeans, or something casual?

Is he in a suit or casual clothing?

Look at whether there is a veil.

If the photograph you love depends heavily on a long veil floating behind the bride, that veil is part of what makes the photograph work.

Look at the light.

Was it taken in the morning, evening, sunset, shade, or on a cloudy day?

Was the sun behind the couple?

Was it reflecting from water?

If an inspiration picture was taken early in the morning at the same location where you want to photograph in the evening, the location may be identical but the final image can still look completely different.

The shadows may fall differently across the face, neck, shoulders, waist, clothing, and background.

Before saving inspiration photographs, ask yourself:

What is it about this picture that I actually love?

That answer helps much more than simply saying, “I want this pose.”

Height changes everything.

It changes where heads line up, where hands fall, how a hug looks, how a kiss works, whether someone naturally rests against a shoulder or chest, and which angles look most comfortable.

Heels can change that even further.

The goal is not to force your body into someone else’s pose.

The goal is to take the idea and adjust it to your bodies.

Practicing in front of a mirror is one of the easiest ways to learn what you like about your own face and body.

Turn your face slightly left and right.

See whether you have a side you prefer.

Move your chin slightly forward and down.

Notice what happens to your jawline.

Put your weight on your back leg.

Bend the front knee slightly.

Turn your torso three-quarters instead of standing straight toward the mirror.

Move one shoulder.

Shift your hip.

Change your hand placement.

These tiny movements can make a huge difference.

You do not need to memorize poses.

The point is to become more familiar with your own body so guided posing feels easier during the actual session.

Let’s use the waist or midsection as an example.

A bouquet of flowers can be incredibly helpful because it gives your hands somewhere natural to go, creates another visual layer in front of the waist, and can help shape the arms.

If both arms are pressed flat against the body, the waist can sometimes appear wider.

If we move the elbows slightly away from the torso and position flowers correctly, we can create more space and definition around the waist.

A coffee cup can do something similar in a more casual image.

So can a purse, bag, jacket, picnic basket, sunglasses, champagne bottle, flowers, or another prop that naturally fits the session.

The goal is not to obviously hide behind something.

The goal is to use the object naturally while also adjusting body angle, torso rotation, hip placement, weight placement, hand position, arm position, camera angle, light, and where your partner is standing.

Sometimes moving only a few inches can completely change how the body photographs.

It can make a big difference.

Editing can enhance a photograph, but there is a difference between enhancing something that already looks beautiful and trying to rebuild everything later.

Hair and makeup can define eyes, brows, cheekbones, lips, lashes, and overall facial shape.

An engagement session is also a great opportunity to test wedding-day hair and makeup before the actual wedding.

You may love something in the mirror and then notice something different after seeing it professionally photographed.

If you are having a facial, peel, waxing, extraction, or another treatment, give your skin time to calm down.

These treatments can sometimes create temporary redness, dryness, puffiness, sensitivity, or irritation.

Avoid trying something completely new immediately before an important photography session if you do not already know how your skin reacts.

Absolutely.

If you have already spent time on hair and makeup, an outfit change can give you much more variety.

You can do a luxury look, casual look, romantic look, beach look, or fun look.

You do not always need a complete wardrobe change either.

A jacket, sweater, sunglasses, shoes, jewelry, hat, or another accessory can change the entire feel.

If you have one outfit you love the most, wear it first while hair, makeup, clothing, and energy are at their freshest.

Absolutely.

A true surprise proposal creates a feeling that is different from almost any other shoot because the reaction is real and completely unplanned.

The person being proposed to does not know what is about to happen.

The shock, tears, laughter, nervousness, hands over the face, first look at the ring, and first hug happen only once.

You can recreate the kneeling pose later.

You can take another ring picture.

You can repeat a kiss.

But you cannot recreate the first second someone realizes what is happening.

Start with your partner.

Would they love something private, romantic, beachy, luxurious, casual, dramatic, or surrounded by family?

Then think about the practical side.

Is the location crowded?

Where is the sun?

Where will your partner naturally face?

Where can the photographer stand without giving away the surprise?

Is the background attractive?

Can family hide nearby?

Can decorations be used safely?

Is drone coverage permitted?

Do you have a backup if weather changes?

A beautiful location is only useful if it also works for the actual proposal.

Make the day believable.

If your partner never dresses up for a random beach walk, suddenly insisting on formal clothing may make them suspicious.

Create a reason that makes sense.

Dinner, an anniversary, family pictures, a reservation, a date, or another believable plan.

If friends and family are involved, make sure everyone understands that one accidental text, location share, social media post, or early arrival can spoil the surprise.

Think about where the photographer is, where the light is coming from, what is behind you, and whether your body will block your partner’s face or the ring.

If possible, position yourself so the photographer has a chance of seeing both expressions.
